Melbourne Wearable Art Series #4 - Sylkz

Hi, my alias is Sylkz, I was born and raised in Melbourne and I've been greatly influenced by the street art culture that has consumed the streets of this Metropolitan City. The reference made on the jacket 'Burn City' is a play on Melbourne city = MelBURN city and also eludes to a certain graffiti terminology: 'burner pieces', the term 'Burn City' is known to many graffiti artists in Melbourne. A burner piece is a complicated body of work that has taken time and effort to complete, it's a style statement, and one that has flooded the walls of our city. One only needs to take a short stroll down one of our laneways before being awestruck by enormous bodies of art, refined yet distorted constructions of letters with bold color combinations and characters. The mastery of these concepts has burned hot in our streets and I for one feel privileged to be able to physically view and be inspired by some of these amazing artist, like Phibs. Anyone who knows graffiti knows Phibs. This is the kind of level of mastery I strive for. My career in fashion has also meshed with passion for all forms of art really, not just graffiti, and so I love working on custom hand painted pieces. Most of my commissions have been through word of mouth but now I am working on starting an online business that will focus on merchandise and one off unique art pieces.
